As we have told in a previous post, pre-order apps are apps that are available on the Apple App Store up to 90 days in advance of its release. Once the app becomes available on the store, users can choose to pre-order it and have it installed when it’s published. Today we are looking into more detailed data to discover the growth of this feature that became available a couple of years ago.
Apple App Store Pre-Order Apps Blast [Infographic]
Super Mario Run was the first mobile game available for pre-order in 2016 (btw, you can check our awesome infographic about it!), and the feature became available in 2017. That’s 2 years already, but it hasn’t been much used until recently. At TheTool we noticed that pre-orders were becoming more popular in search results and decided to analyze data to check how important they are in terms of search and visibility. We chose a specific date (May 20th, 2019) and studied the data for the United States (with a sample of 25,669 keywords). There goes the result:
Pre-Order Apps: Infographics data
It seems more than evident that pre-order apps are obtaining importance in terms of visibility in search. We tracked almost 1,6M apps on May 20th in the United States, and 463 of them were pre-order apps. At the moment, the majority of the products that are available on pre-order are games (84%), whilst only 16% of developers consider making an app available for pre-order. It looks like a reasonable strategy, as mobile games kind of need that hype and buzz that only comes with the pre-order feature.
Although it might seem there are too little apps available for pre-order, what’s interesting to see here is the insights we obtained from search: we studied 25,669 keywords in the U. S. and 14,761 retrieved pre-order results. That’s almost 60%! So we can see that a few less than 1% of the apps have visibility in more than 60% of the sample of keywords tracked. That’s huge! Regarding their position in the rankings, 10 keywords gave a pre-order app as a result in top 1. The rest of the results are the following:
- Top 1: 10 results.
- Top 5 (between 2nd and 5th position): 315 results.
- Top 10 (between 6th and 10th position): 377 results.
- Top 50 (between 11th and 50th position): 2,629 results.
- Top 100 (between 51st and 100th position): 3,209 results.
- Top 250 (between 101st and 250th position): 8,221 results
Last but not least, these are the mobile apps and games available for pre-order with more visibility on the Apple App Store Search:
What do you think about these insights? Did you know that pre-order apps were so powerful in search rankings? Leave your opinion in the comments and don’t forget to share the infographic. Thanks in advance.
We are currently working on some awesome stuff for pre-orders, too, so… Stay tuned! 🙂
